WAYLAND — Trailing by three goals, with under 40 seconds remaining in Thursday’s Sectional quarterfinal against Medfield, the Wayland Warriors faced a steep challenge, but also a familiar, “been there before” moment.

On May 17, trailing late in the game to three-time defending champion Lincoln-Sudbury, Wayland would come-back, force overtime, and win in OT, in a game which helped define their storied season.

Trailing 12-9 with time ticking away on Thursday night, Wayland would harness that experience from the regular season, and score three goals in 38 seconds, including the game-tying goal from Aiden Chitkara, as time expired, to send the game to overtime.

After Wayland FOGO Jake Tyska won the draw in OT, Wayland coach Marcus Craigwell called a timeout and brought his team together for one final play call.

Senior captain Ben Travis would answer that call for Wayland, as he scored out of the timeout to send his team to the Division 2 Sectional Semifinals, with a 13-12 win.

Wayland, who never led in the game until they were victorious, scored nine of their 12 regulation goals in the second half.

Wayland was led by the impressive play of Tyska at the faceoff X, Travis, Chitkara, midfielder Chris Balicki, defenseman Kyle Miller, attackman Michael Lampert, and LSM Kyle Camphausen.

Lost in the defeat was an outstanding effort of the perennial D2 powerhouse Medfield Warriors, who executed impeccably all night and were led by the standout play of 2-Way midfielder Tom Schofield.

Medfield also received great games from defenseman John Schofield, goalie Peter Barrette, and a balanced offensive attack led by attackman Jack McCordic.

Wayland will host No. 5 Concord-Carlisle on Tuesday, June 12, as C-C defeated No. 4 Foxboro on Thursday night. Wayland and C-C are no strangers to each other, having just concluded a 10-9 Wayland victory only one week ago (May 30).
