2018 D1S Quarters: BC High 18, Needham 5

DORCHESTER – The gap between the BC High team Needham faced in April and the one the tenth-seeded Rockets took on in a Division 1 South quarterfinals matchup Sunday is immense.

The second-seeded Eagles returned plenty of defensive starters after a run to the D1 state championship last season but dealt with some growing pains while integrating new and relatively inexperienced players at attack early in the season.

On Sunday, those attackmen proved that they’re now a cohesive unit capable of matching goals with any team in the state, as they carved up Needham in an 18-5 victory.

BC High (17-3) received goals from 10 different players, including poles Will Bowen and Martin Folan, while three different Eagles recorded a hat trick.

Freshman attack Carter Rice (2 goals, assist) started the action with a goal 24 seconds into the game, then junior Christian “Chi Chi” Price laced a couple of high shots past Needham goalie Andrew McNally (16 saves) to make it 4-0 in the opening minutes.

Needham (13-7) rallied for consecutive goals on two occasions, but BC High quickly responded with a string of goals in a dominant team effort.

Bowen led the charge defensively and Max Djusberg controlled draws at the faceoff X to keep Needham off the ball and allow the Eagles offense to operate. Bowen was particularly deadly in the transition game, helping clear the zone and set up scoring opportunities for his attacking teammates.

BC High will host No. 11 Wellesley Tuesday in the D1 South semifinals. Wellesley upset No. 3 Duxbury in a 9-8 overtime thriller Saturday. Gametime is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12.
